I've been teaching at an Arabic weekend school as a volunteer for past 2 years. I am currently an employed teachers assistant at the school. Prior to working and volunteering, I attended as a student for about 4 years. The school gives me an opportunity to not only stay in touch with my Middle Eastern background but also develop skills such as working efficiently with children, working and communicating with other adults and meeting new people.
Weekend Camp Counselor
In addition to working as an assistant teacher at the Arabic Weekend School, I work as a girls weekend camp counselor. This camp is very similar to the girls scouts in the sense that it teaches young girls (2nd grade through 8th) valuable life skills. The girls participate in art, cooking and sports activities as a way to relieve stress and teach them skills such as team work, leadership and ingenuity. In addition, the counselors give lectures on important social issues that haunt this generation in an effort to better prepare them for future obstacles.
