This narrative provides insight into the life of a German immigrant family in Detroit in the early 1900s. Writing this essay was a crucial part of the course as it gave me the opportunity to not only hear about what Detroit was like as a whole, but understand what living in the early 1900's was like from the perspective of a certain group of people. It is important to attempt writing narratives like this as it allows one to truly temporarily leave all current ideas and ways of thinking and try to look at the world from a completely new perspective. Researching German Americans in Detroit in this time period really made me appreciative my situation and my parents for how much they have contributed to making my life as stress-free as it is. I chose to include this essay because I thought it was the most unique. It is not uncommon for me to write about my personal opinions or thoughts, however it is unusual to write about fictional characters using non-fictional settings, events, experiences and feeling. It was a true challenge that I feel like I was able to successfully overcome. However, though it was challenging it was an enjoyable experience.
